BattleTech is Dead, Long Live BattleTech!12 Feb 2020 1
We’re big fans of Harebrained Schemes’ BattleTech game here at Strategy Gamer. It’s a bit clunky in places, but there hasn’t been a game quite like it in a long while (and not in the four years since it was first announced either) and remains one of the best turn-based tactical experiences you can have.
Even someone like myself who’s largely ignorant of the wider Mechwarrior lore and appeal, finds it enjoyable. It’s also a game with some of the best 2D art I have ever seen in my 12+ career covering videogames.
Seriously, look at this nonsense.
So, I am kinda bummed to hear that Harebrained Schemes have decided to draw a line and move on. In an update to backers on Kickstarter, Harebrained Schemes co-founder and lead BattleTech person Mitch Gitelman announced that the upcoming 1.9 Update would be their last outing with the game. After that, it would be customer support and then up to the modding community to create new content. Here’s the video that came with the announcement:
They also shared this rather cool infographic breaking down the community’s interactions with the game since releasing in April 2018:
Poor Dekker. Harebrained Schemes as a studio will be moving on to a couple of non-BattleTech related projects that haven’t been announced yet. We’ve got a great BattleTech Mech Guide that Ian created for us if you’re looking for ways to up your game, and I’ve been meaning to get some more in-depth features up and running as well, so keep an eye out for those.
The 1.9 Update is due to land in late February.
