These are the best Strategy mods of 2019 (according to Moddb)06 Jan 2020 0
Before Christmas we reported on how ModDB were gearing up for their annual awards run. They’d just announced what the top 100 mods were, and Strategy game mods were pretty dominant. We weren’t able to keep a close eye on things over the holiday break but we’re back now, and can share with you how the final awards panned out.
Make sure you head on over to ModDB’s awards page for more details.
Player’s Choice Mod of the Year 2019
Strategy game mods were very popular with MODDB’s audience, with seven of the final 10 in this category being for strategy games. Specifically Empire at War, which had a whopping four different mods in the top ten.
The winner was Empire At War Remake: Galactic Civil War, which is more of an enhancement mod rather than an overhaul. It adds new units and updates the graphics, but largely tries to keep to how the vanilla game was designed. Other Empire at War mods in the top 10 were Thrawn's Revenge: Imperial Civil War, Republic at War and Rise of the Mandalorians.
The runner-up was the Ultimate Apocalypse Mod for Dawn of War: Soulstorm. Make sure you check out the Player’s Choice page for the full list of finalists.
Editor’s Choice Mod of the Year 2019
This category is different as the editorial team simply chose a number of subcategories and assigned a single winner to each, so there are no runner’s up or anything. Not as many strategy game mods won top spots here, but here’s a quick look at the mods that did get recognition:
- Historical Accuracy Award - North & South: ACW The American Civil War (Napoleon: Total War)
- Best Adaptation Award - Star Trek Armada III: Uprising (Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellion)
- Most Anticipated - Dragon Age: Total War (Medieval II: Total War - Kingdoms)

Player’s Choice Most Anticipated Mod 2019
Given the inherent nature of modding, it’s not as common as you’d think for a popular mod to also be ‘finished’. Plenty of my own personal favourite mods across my time playing strategy games have been technically ‘unreleased’. The moment they are, the mod team is usually moving on to the sequel or an updated version, which then counts as a new project and thus is again considered ‘unfinished’.
This is another category that the community voted on, and there are only two strategy mods in the top five - Star Wars - Galaxy At War for Men of War: Assault Squad 2 won third place, with Ages of the Federation for SoaSE Rebellion getting fifth place.
More strategy mods got ‘honourable mentions’ however, including Sins of the Prophets, Command & Conquer Generals Evolution and Star Wars: Interregnum.
You can see the full list of winners and nominations here.
What do you think of 2019’s best mods? Have you played any of the above? I think one thing I’d like to do on Strategy Gamer is look at more mods, or at the very least, just play more myself - there’s a wealth of cool projects out there.
