Civilization 6 New Frontier Pass - Not the Expansion you were looking for

By Joe Robinson 11 May 2020 0

Civilization 6’s most recent expansion, Gathering Storm, was interesting for a few reasons. For starters, it finally brought the newer Civ-title in line with the (at the time) more popular Civ 5, and since then the newer game has finally over-taken Civ 5 in terms of player numbers. But it also raised the question of what would come next. Civ 5 only got two expansions, after all, and many wondered if Civ 6 would be equally as restrained?

The answer is now a resounding ‘No’, although we’re still not getting a third expansion at this point. Say hello to the Civilization 6 New Frontier Pass:

Between now and May 2021, six new DLC packs are going to be released every two months with at least one new civilization and leader, a new game mode and additional new content as well.

The first pack, due out on May 21st, will for example include the Maya and Gran Colombia Civilizations, a new game mode called ‘Apocalypse’ as well as new city-states and resources. The second pack, due out in July, will add Ethiopia and a new game mode called ‘Secret Societies’. As you can see, we don’t know much about the later packs but we imagine it will all be revealed in time.

This page talks a bit more about future packs, hinting at the inclusion of everything from new Great Persons, to new World Wonders, even new Districts. This page also points out that some of the new content will require one to own specific expansions for it to be enabled, so keep an eye out for that!

It reminds me of the Season Pass content you get with games like Rainbow Six Siege, if you’ve played that. Each pack will be available to purchase individually, or you can subscribe to the whole Season Pass for $39.99/£32.99.

As the image above teases, there is also due to be free content updates as well, and anyone who buys the full whack will be granted two free ‘Persona Packs’. These seem to be experimental DLCS that offer new takes on existing leaders, with new back-drops/skins, abilities and agendas. “Rough Rider Teddy” and “Magnificence Catherine” will replace Teddy Roosevelt and Catherine de Medici respectively.

The New Frontiers Pass will be available on PC, Consoles & the Nintendo Switch.
