Funcom announces XCOM inspired ‘Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden’

Independent developer/publisher Funcom has announced a new tactical adventure/RPG inspired by XCOM that’s due to release later this year.

Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden is based on the classic ‘Mutant’ IP as well as the Mutant Year Zero table-top role-playing game from Free League and Modiphius Entertainment. Funcom own the company that holds the interactive rights to the IP, so we imagine this helped.

The game sees the player take control of a trio of unlikely heroes, which includes a crossbow-wielding duck, as they navigate a post-human Earth. It is powered by the Unreal Engine and features XCOM-style combat.

“It’s an unusual label for a game, but tactical adventure really fits the bill, no duck pun intended,” says Executive Producer Ulf Andersson from developer Bearded Ladies;

“Our goal is to blend the deep and tactical combat of ‘XCOM’ with a branching storyline that unfolds as you explore overgrown forests and abandoned cities with your team of Mutants. Mixing that with real-time stealth gameplay gives you a unique way to approach or avoid combat situations you encounter while exploring."

Live gameplay will be shown for the first time at GDC 2018 in San Francisco. You can go the official website here.

Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden is due out sometime in 2018 on PC, Playstation 4 and Xbox One.
