Jagged Alliance Returns

Jagged Alliance is one of those classic turn-based tactics franchises that you’ve probably heard a lot about but are not entirely sure why. Sadly, many attempts at more modern JA remakes have fallen flat with audiences both old and new. I remember reviewing a game called Hired Guns: The Jagged Edge that was meant to be a JA reboot of sorts, but the license holders pulled out at the last minute, hence the name.

Prior to THQ Nordic acquiring the license it’s been in the custody of more than few companies, including Strategy First and Game Factor Interactive. Now THQ Nordic have announced they’re bringing the franchise back with Jagged Alliance: Rage! Well, technically HandyGames are bringing it back, but they're a THQ Nordic division so it's all the same, really.

Apparently, despite the franchise attempting to move on from the original games, the mercenaries involved in the original Jagged Alliance game have been fighting non-stop for the past twenty years, and begin Rage! old, fed-up and stuck behind enemy lines:

In Jagged Alliance: Rage! you are constantly on the brink of breakdown. Badly equipped and outnumbered, it's up to the player to lead their seasoned mercenaries in tactical turn-based missions and to light the spark of a revolution.

Reported features include:

  • 2 Player online co-op mode.
  • Deep turn-based tactical gameplay mixed with adventure elements.
  • Choose a variety of tactics ranging from stealth to brute force.
  • Strong character personalities with own skills, desires and personal conflicts.
  • Rage skills: Unique character abilities that get more powerful over the course of the battle.
  • Powerful Commanders coordinate enemy troops on the battlefields.
  • Face terrifying experimental drugs and use them to manipulate your enemies.

You seem to only be able to take two mercenaries into missions with you (which explains the co-op feature), which is an odd choice. Turn-based tactics games shine through the deep and varied combat options have through a diverse and specialised team. There’s only so much breadth you can have with two people, so it’ll be interesting to see how that plays out.

If you want a more detailed preview, our brothers and sisters in arms over at PCGamesN actually got to go hands on with a preview build, so you should go give that a read.

Jagged Alliance: Rage! is due out this fall on PC, Playstation 4 and Xbox One.
