Offworld Trading Company Devs are Creating a New Historical 4X Strategy Game

Ten crowns is an awfully specific number of crowns to want. I mean, I’d be happy with one, personally. Maybe an additional one spare in my drawer in case I lost the first one.

Mohawk Games seem set on going for the full ten though in their new 4X strategy game, 10 Crowns, which is set to be “an epic-scale turn-based strategy game that lets players create the greatest dynasty in world history.”

If you’re unfamiliar with who these guys are, they’re being run by Civilization IV’s lead designer Soren Johnson, and Civilization V’s Art Lead Dorian Newcomb. There are other former Firaxis devs at Mohawk as well. Together, the pair have more recently been developing Offworld Trading Company with Stardock.

10 Crowns represents a return to the team’s development roots, although they plan to make some “important and radical innovations to the [4X] genre”. What’s most interesting about the announcement is not that this will be a new historical 4X strategy game however, but that is’ being published by Starbreeze Studios.

This is a company that’s dabbled in both being a developer and a publisher. Development highlights include the ill-fated Syndicate reboot in 2012 and the more successful Payday 2 online co-op shooter. In terms of publishing, they’ve helped bring Dead by Daylight and Raid: World War II to market. They’re not exactly the first company I’d go to to publish a strategy game, not with others like Paradox Interactive or Kalypso out there but it’ll be interesting to see how things turn out.

It’s going to be a while at least before we hear anything more. The announcement is more about how Starbreeze has signed Mohawk for this new game, as the title itself is still in ‘prototyping’.

Did you like Offworld Trading Company? Are you excited by the idea of former Civ devs returning to their roots? Let us know in the comments!
