New Sins of a Solar Empire DLC Out Today17 Dec 2018 1
The original Sins of a Solar Empire was released nearly ten years ago, if my memory serves, and was probably one of the earliest games I reviewed. It was a revelation – an RTS/4X hybrid where you constructed mighty fleets and spread out amongst the stars, but one that demanded the attention and mental capacity of StarCraft.
Ironclad kept honing their rough and ready space-strategy title over time with several expansions, before finally releasing the stand-alone Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellion in 2012. Unfortunately, that name would get them in legal trouble and then their attempted pivot to MOBA with Sins of a Dark Age didn’t pan out, so these days the studio is relatively silent.
Still, to see them still working on DLC for SOASE after all this time gives me hope that the studio is alive and well.
In case you haven’t heard, today is the day that SOASE gets the Minor Factions DLC. It introduces 15 distinct smaller factions that populate the map, we imagine in a way city-states do in Civilization V. The Player and other AI super-powers will need to compete with each other for influence or control of these factions.
Each one comes with its own advantage or bonus as well to whoever manages to win them over. A typical game of Sins always has rebel/pirate fleets lurking around un-colonised planets, so it’ll be interesting to see whether these ‘factions’ get much more agency than that, but if all works as advertised this should be one of the biggest shake-ups to Rebellion’s gameplay in quite a few years.
Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellion - Minor Factions DLC will be available today via Steam and will cost $5.99.
