Slitherine Announces New 4X Grimdark Title: Warhammer 40,000 Gladius - Relics of War

As our sister site The Wargamer noted last week, there’s a new Warhammer 40,000 game on the way courtesy of Slitherine & Matrix Games – Warhammer 40,000: Gladius – Relics of War.

A Civilization-like 4X experience is perhaps not the first thing that comes to mind when you think of the grimdark, but it certainly opens up some interesting possibilities. Gladius will pit four races against each other – the Guard, Space Marines, Orks & Necrons – as they vie for control of Gladius Prime:

A brand new, deep storyline has been created to combine elements of 4X gameplay with a combat-focused system. The evolution of technology, construction of infrastructures and exploration of an unknown world, goes hand in hand with the management of military resources, including heroes with special abilities and mighty war machines.

While some basics will be consistent, the game is designed to play differently depending on which faction you’re playing – so things like construction, resources etc… will vary, and each faction will have its own unique quest-chain and storyline to follow.

Warhammer: 40,000: Gladius – Relics of War is being developed by Proxy Studios, the same guys who developed Pandora: First Contact. We reviewed it quite favourably when it released, so we’re confident these guys have the matter in hand.

No release date yet, but Slitherine doesn’t usually like long-lead times from announcement so we’ll be keeping our eyes peeled early next year.
