A new Starship Troopers game is on the way, would you like to know more?26 Nov 2019 2
I’ll be honest, as much as I consider the 1997 Starship Troopers film one of the finest pieces of entertainment in history (fact), it’s not a license I’ve particularly craved ‘more’ of over the past twenty years. I’ve read Heinlein’s original novel, and found it a bit dry/serious and the two sequel films were pretty naff. I do have found memories of the 1999 CGI TV show and the more recent CGI films have been way more interesting, although I’ve only seen the first one so far. Perhaps it's the license's poor treatment that's made me not that bothered about getting more stuff based on it, like games.
Speaking of game-related products, I’ve not played any of the smattering of releases that have come out over the years. To date, the Starship Troopers franchise has produced:
- A board war game (from the seventies based wholly on the book, but it was re-released in 1997 to be more like the film)
- A real-time tactical game from 2000
- An FPS from 2005
- A table-top RPG, also from 2005
- An aborted miniatures game
The real-time tactics tie-in has the most relevance here, because it seems a new strategy game based on the Starship Troopers license is coming. Slitherine, the mainstream strategy arm of war game publishers Matrix Games, will be announcing their new Starship Troopers product next Monday.
The brief clip is from the 1997 film, and the "Would you like to know more?" reference is also taken from the film as well. That, and the fact that they told me they were working on a Starship Troopers game a couple of years ago, makes me confident this is what’s coming.
I’m very intrigued, but also a little hesitant. The developer they have lined up is called the Artistocrats. They are a good bunch, don’t get me wrong, but if you look on Steam for example the only games they’re known for is the Order of Battle WW2 war game series. This is a Panzer General-like game that’s set at an operational layer, with units representing entire divisions or at the very least large formations of combat troops.
For me personally, Starship Troopers has always been a more intimate affair - more XCOM than Total War (although a game in the Total War style might actually work). At a stretch, a game like Age of Wonders: Planetfall perhaps could be interesting… but I’m currently not sold on the idea of an Order of Battle but Starships Troopers game.
Granted, that’s not to say that’s what they will create. It’s easy to type-cast a studio based on the games they’ve made before, but studios are perfectly capable of changing things up completely, so we’ll keep our minds open and wait to hear more next week.
The announcement broadcast will be going live on Slitherine’s Twitch channel at 6pm BST, Monday December 2nd.
