Starship Troopers: Terran Command Announced, Does Not Want You To Live Forever02 Dec 2019 0
We told you last week that an announcement for a new Starship Troopers game was coming today from Slitherine, and now it’s currently being live-streamed over on their Twitch channel. Say hello to new recruit Starship Troopers: Terran Command.
This is a real-time strategy game that’s inspired (in both setting and aesthetics) by the events of the 1997 Starship Troopers film. Here’s the trailer:
You can also have a gameplay trailer for good measure:
Starship Troopers: Terran Command is due out in 2020, and will feature the following headline features (as listed in the press release):
- Dynamically generated campaigns for virtually limitless replayability.
- Dozens of unique unit types, each with their own special abilities.
- Terrain elevation, True Line of Sight & True Line of Fire provide deep tactical gameplay.
- An extensive technology tree to develop and customize your forces.
- Persistent leaders can be attached to units and upgraded throughout the campaign.
- Heroics, explosions, gore, and Bugs. Lots of Bugs.
I especially like the part about all the bugs. This is actually all sounding, and looking, more promising than I originally feared, as the developers behind this game have only previously made the Order of Battle war games. The question was, could these guys make a different kind of game? So far it seems like they can.
At first glance, Terran Command reminds me of another Slitherine title called Warhammer 40,000: Sanctus Reach, except it’s real-time instead of turn-based. They also seem to be using some cool new line-of-sight mechanics that they’ve also used in other war games, such as Close Combat: The Bloody First.
The narrative of the game seems very rooted in the original film and is also quite basic - you’re sent to a human colony overrun by Arachnids, and you’ve got to fight to survive and/or wipe out the infestation from the planet. I wonder how much Slitherine’s deal with Sony extends as far as the license is concerned. They did a fantastic job with the BSG universe with Battlestar Galactica: Deadlock, and were given a lot of leeway to create original ships, craft a canon original story and so on.
There doesn’t seem to be the same kind of freedom with Terran Command. The initial screenshots seem to show the mech suits from Starship Troopers 3: Marauders, but we wonder if they’re a bit more locked in to what they can and can’t cover with this one.
Starship Troopers: Terran Command is due out on PC sometime in 2020, we’ll bring you more information soon.
