Strategy Gamer Weekend Bulletin: June 14th, 2019

By Joe Robinson 15 Jun 2019 0

Welcome to the second Strategy Gamer Weekend Bulletin, our weekly round-up of seven strategy gaming stories that we think might be interesting, but that we didn’t get a chance to cover during the week. With E3 dominating the conversation this past week, there were a lot of smaller stories that slipped under the radar so here’s a quick summary:

Age of Empires 2 Getting Remastered. Again.

Not content with kicking off this whole ‘HD Remaster’ nonsense in 2013, Microsoft have decided that Age of Empires 2 HD isn’t remastered enough, so they’ve announced a ‘Definitive Edition’ due to land this august. It’ll come with a new expansion with new factions, plus re-done textures to work in 4K monitors. Fancy.

Commandos 2 & Praetorians getting Remasters

Kalypso Media have announced they are doing HD remasters of two of their classic strategy games – Commandos 2 & Praetorians. Not something we expected to come out of E3 this year, but then HD remasters of strategy games are kind of ‘in’ right now.

As well as getting the glam treatment, both games will be coming to PS4, Xbox One & Steam, with Commandos 2 also being ported to Switch, and iPad/Android tablets.

AutoChess Wars Heat Up

Valve recently announced that their own official version of AutoChessDota Underlords - is nearing open beta within the next couple of weeks, while Riot Games have announced their own take on AutoChessTeamfight Tactics. It’s coming as a new mode for League of Legends, as opposed to a standalone experience like Underlords.

Meanwhile, the ‘OG’ AutoChess is getting a snazzy new PC version built in Unreal, which will be exclusive to the Epic Games Store.

Vermintide 2 & Total War: Warhammer 2 Bromance

In a touching display of co-operation between two studios who share a licence, the developers Vermintide 2 and Total War: Warhammer II are running a promotion where, if you own one of the games, you can get the other one for half price. Not bad, if you’re a Warhammer Fantasy fanatic.

Per Aspera Announced

There were quite a few new strategy and simulation games announced at E3, but the one that caught our eyes the most was Per Aspera, from Raw Fury (publishers of games like Kingdom: Two Crowns). It’s a more logistics focused simulation of exploring and developing Mars, opposite games like Surviving Mars which was more focused on people and building a society. I’ve always had a soft spot for logistics, so we’ll be keeping our eyes peeled for when this game launches in 2020.

Lord of the Rings Card Game Release Date

You may remember late last year we talked about The Lord of the Rings: Living Card Game. It’s a digital adaptation of a physical game of the same name that, whilst I found it enjoyable, I’ll freely admit I just wanted to the original game ported whole-sale.

It’s been growing and building its identity in Early Access in the months since, and now has a (slightly) new name and a new release date. The Lord of the Rings: Adventure Card Game is due out on August 8th, 2019.

Lorenzo il Magnifico coming to Steam

In other digital board game news, the popular game Lorenzo il Magnifico will be coming to Steam this august following a successful Kickstarter campaign. It’s a worker placement game where dice rolls determine the strength of a player’s workers in their quest to gain the most victory points and become the masters of Florence.
