Strategy Games News Bulletin - June 19th 202019 Jun 2020 0
It's been a really good week for strategy gamers - almost too good. We've covered what we could during the week (as well as rounding up all of the exciting news that came out last weekend), but there's still more left to cover so this week's strategy games news bulletin is another bumper edition.
In terms of other things during the week you may have missed: Paradox is running their annual Summer Sale event, Valve is hosting a 'Summer Festival' to celebrate upcoming releases that includes a surprising amount of decent strategy games and Slitherine have tried to put the world at east by announcing a new game about thermonuclear annihilation. Thanks guys.
Meanwhile, thousands of miles away...
A Game of Thrones: The Board Game goes Digital
Asmodee Digital have partnered with Dire Wolf - the creators of excellent digital board game ports like Raiders of the North Sea - to bring the Game of Thrones board game to digital life. Asmodee Digital are a subsidiary of board game giant Asmodee, who happen to also own the creators of the table-top game (Fantasy Flight Games).
In the board game, the map of Westeros is divided into regions, with six of the major houses from the Song of Ice & Fire universe represented: Stark, Lannister, Baratheon, Tyrell, Martell & Greyjoy. Each starts with their own domain, but each must also expand outwards to try and claim as many strongholds as possible. In the board game any one faction to get seven Castles/Strongholds (or control the most by the end of ten rounds) is declared the winner. This is in essence a game of conquest, so things like alliances & diplomacy are temporary states - only one may sit on the Iron Throne!
The digital version is due out in Q3 2020, and will feature full solitaire support against the AI as well as online multiplayer for up to six people. It even includes content from the recently released Mother of Dragons expansion, although not the two additional factions that expansion comes with. Maybe after launch!
Civilization 6 Free Update - June 2020
Firaxis have put out a new dev diary detailing the changes coming in the next free patch update, which is due to drop on June 25th, 2020. It would have been nice to have a physical change-log so that we could share some of the hard details, but you can always watch the video yourself to find out. This new patch will also kick off ‘Season 2’ of the Red Death special mode, which will introduce new Zombie & Alien factions, as well as rework other factions.
Surviving The Aftermath Update #8 - Tainted Earth
Surviving the Aftermath is still chugging away in Early Access over on the Epic Games Store, and they’ve just rolled out their eighth major update. Headline changes include new ‘level’ of pollution, colony structures being affected by pollution and an overhaul as to how food and water are handled. The full patch notes can be read here.
Humble Fight for Racial Justice Bundle
You may have seen that recently indie videogames platform Itch.io ran a charity drive where they were offering thousands of games in one pay-once bundle - for a ridiculously low price. Now Humble are taking their own turn with their ‘Fight for Racial Justice’ bundle. $1,200 worth of games, books & comics are available for $30/£25.50. There are no tiers to this bundle - there’s simply one price that unlocks everything.
It’s worth pointing out that even though Strategy Gamer is affiliated with Humble, this time around 100% of the money goes to charity. We’ve added our partner information to the URL so we can try and track how much money we raise.
At the time of writing there were only four days left on the bundle, and it’s already raised nearly 2 million pounds. Check out the bundle here.
