Strategy Games News Bulletin - November 8th, 2019

By Joe Robinson 08 Nov 2019 3

Strategy Gaming has been ticking along quite nicely this week - no major new releases of note but we're expecting a few towards the end of the month. We spent this week rounding off some key resource items I was keen to get rolled out, such as a new mods guide for Warhammer 2, and our master guide to Crusader Kings 3We did something similar for Imperator: Rome and it proved quite popular, so we're going to see if the same thing works again here.

I was also quite touched that a lot of you liked my article on my 'Top Played Steam List' - feel free to get involved in the comments if you want to share your own lists, I'd love to see what you've all been playing.

Meanwhile, in strategy games...

A Year of Rain Launches into Early Access

The co-op RTS inspired by Warcraft and other classic titles has finally released onto Steam Early Access. We've written about it before, if you want to know what our initial impressions were, but now it's available for 20% off the RRP if you want to give it a go. Additionally, there's a 2-person pac k available that nets you 40% off the final price.

We're honestly not sure which way this one will go, so it'll be good to get some other people involved to give some additional voices. They're planning on updating the game every 6-8 week,s but are going to be in EA for a while (at least a year). Here's the EA launch trailer:

New Game Alert: Starbase Admiral

If there's one thing I love, it's spaceships. If there's one thing I love more, it's designing and deploying a fleet of spaceships. Starbase Admiral is an upcoming sci-fi RTS where you must build and manage your own starbase as well as a fleet of interstellar vessels, which you can design yourself. It's got elements of base-defence, resource gathering, and of course tactical fleet battles. You can wishlist it on steam; it's due to release in some form somewhere between the end of the year and summer 2020. It's also going to sport multiplayer as a key component.

Dog Duty Gets a free Trial Weekend

We hadn't heard of Dog Duty before now, but apparently it's a real-time tactical game developed by Dutch publisher SOEDESCO, where "players control a squad of three characters while they wreak havoc, destroy installations and fight the exotic and evil Octo-Army in an open world setting."

It's got a retro-inspired aesthetic and looks pretty neat, although considering it's free to try all weekend until 10am Pacific on Monday, you've got plenty of time to find out for yourself. Here's the trailer:

New Game Alert: Imperium Greek Wars

Another new game to cross out desk; Imperium: Greek Wars is a 4X/historical strategy game set in ancient Greece from the same developers that brought you Aggressors: Ancient Rome. It looks like it's going to be set in a slightly earlier period in Mediterranean history, with a and added dose of mythology.

Aggressors was an ok strategy game that had some interesting ideas, but sometimes felt like a really in=depth Civilization scenario. It'll be interesting to see what lessons the developers have learned since when Imperium launches sometime in Q1 2020.

Stronghold Warlords Unit Spotlight

If you're interested in learning more about the new Strongholds entry, Firefly yesterday put out a video that looks at the units that will be included in the game, specifically for China and Vietnam. There will be three classes of units - Infantry, Cavalry and 'special' units, with each of the Asian factions getting their own unique roster. Here's the video:

Humble Warhammer Week Sale

In the grim darkness of the far future, there is only Humble sales events. This one is a 'themed' one that draws in games from several different publishers and developers, and it's to do with the Games Workshop's nebulous and eternal Warhammer franchise (Fantasy & 40K). There's actually been some pretty decent licensed games in the past couple of years, so now is a great chance to pick some of them up on the cheap. Here are some top picks:

There are other games as well, but the above represents our favourites. The sale runes from now until next Thursday (November 14th), 10am Pacific time. Strategy Gamer is a Humble Affiliate.

That's all we've got time for today - enjoy your weekends!
