I never got around to playing CMANO, for the same reasons that I've been hesitant to toe the waters of its new incarnation, Command: Modern Operations.

Could it be modded into a WW II game?

You can check the Matrix forums, but in a nutshell, they don't have a system to fully represent the short range, unreliable comms and subsequent effects on tactics, for surface units. For air units, there's not really a dogfighting (guns) engine in the detail needed. There are some ships that go back to 1943 in the database, but the engine itself is not really suited to the limitations of the era, according to the designers.

I'm going to buy this when they add land operations. Potential crisis on NATO Eastern Flank is what interest me, and any potential affairs on this theater would be decided mainly on land.

This game weights more than 5 GB and graphically speaking looks like it was made 20+ years ago.
I agree that graphics isn't the main reaons someone would be interested by that kind of games but nonetheless, a little effort on the presentation front wouldn't hurt. Oh and that music, where's that Mute button again?
Finally, a game to avoid for a noob: totallly unfriendly with outdated graphics and presentation.
